How to commission a custom Minecraft mod: the process from idea to launch

Thinking of hiring a developer for a custom Minecraft mod? Here is how a commission works, what to prepare, and how to avoid the common mistakes.

Commissioning a custom Minecraft mod is easier when you know the steps. This guide walks through the whole process, from a rough idea to a mod running on your server.

1. Start with the idea, not the code

You do not need technical language. Describe what players should be able to do, in plain words. "Players catch creatures and fight with them" is a better start than a list of classes and events.

2. Decide mod or plugin

A Fabric mod can add new items, entities, blocks and models, but players usually install it too. A PaperMC plugin runs only on the server, so players join with a normal client. If you are unsure, say so and the developer can recommend one. The Fabric or Paper guide explains the difference.

3. Share the details that matter

  • The Minecraft version you play on
  • Whether it is for singleplayer, a private server or a public server
  • Any mods or plugins it must work with
  • Examples you like, such as videos, screenshots or other mods
  • Your deadline, if there is one

4. Get a quote and a scope

A good quote lists exactly what is included. Anything not on the list is out of scope, which protects both sides. Ask for a time estimate too.

5. Test builds along the way

You should see a working version early, not only at the end. Early tests catch misunderstandings while they are cheap to fix.

6. Launch and support

Agree up front what happens after launch, such as fixing bugs and updating for a new Minecraft version.
