How to brief a Minecraft developer: a checklist for a great first message

A good brief saves days. Use this checklist to describe your Minecraft mod, plugin or minigame so a developer can give an accurate quote quickly.

A clear first message gets you a faster reply and a more accurate quote. Use this checklist when you contact a developer about a mod, plugin or minigame.

The one-sentence idea

Start with a single sentence describing what the project is. For example: "A minigame where players collect random items and then fight on bridged platforms."

How players use it

Describe what a player does from start to finish. Short bullet points are fine.

Technical basics

  • Minecraft version
  • Java Edition or Bedrock
  • Mod (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge) or server plugin (Paper)
  • Singleplayer, private server or public server
  • Expected number of players

References

Links to videos, screenshots or other mods that show what you mean are worth more than a long description.

Must-haves and nice-to-haves

Split the list. The must-haves define the first version. The nice-to-haves can come later if time and budget allow.

Deadline and budget

Give a date if you have one, and a budget range if you can. Both help a developer propose something realistic.

What you will do

Say who will test, who will provide any art or text, and who will run the server.

Send it

You can paste all of this into the hire form. Even a short version works, and questions will follow for anything missing.
